> Your bank only offers a Quicken download? Why a QFX file won't open in QuickBooks, the small change that converts it and when CSV is easier.
If your bank only offers a Quicken download, you can usually still use it. QuickBooks Online accepts the Quicken QFX file in its upload as it is. QuickBooks Desktop refuses it, because Web Connect reads only QBO files, but a small edit to the file's header turns QFX into QBO. A CSV is the fallback.

## Why a Quicken QFX file won't open in QuickBooks Desktop

A Quicken QFX file won't open in QuickBooks Desktop because Desktop's Web Connect reads only QBO files. [Intuit's article on fixing Web Connect import errors](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/bank-connectivity/fix-web-connect-import-errors/L8o5eQjO4_US_en_US) says the .qbo file is "the only type Web Connect can read." The transactions in a QFX file are fine; the wrapper is wrong.

QFX and QBO are close relatives. Both are built on the OFX standard, and both carry Intuit additions. The transaction lines inside look almost the same. The parts that differ sit near the top of the file: the bank's identity and a line called INTU.BID, the bank ID that Intuit's products check.

A bank that offers only Quicken has set up its file for Quicken's list of institutions and not for QuickBooks. So the same file can import cleanly into Quicken and fail in QuickBooks Desktop.

One error you may see when a Desktop import fails on the bank's identity is "QuickBooks is unable to verify the Financial Institution information for this download." That message has its own walk-through in the guide to [the unable to verify financial institution error](/blog/unable-to-verify-the-financial-institution-information).

## Does QuickBooks Online accept a Quicken download as it is?

QuickBooks Online accepts a Quicken download as it is. [Intuit's page on uploading transactions manually](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/import-transactions/manually-upload-transactions-quickbooks-online/L0rE9OXBz_US_en_US) names QBO as the suggested type but says you can also upload a Quicken QFX file or a CSV. Online users can skip any conversion.

The upload path is Bank transactions, then the Link account menu, then Upload from file. Choose the QFX, pick the QuickBooks account it belongs to and continue. The same page limits each file to 350 KB and 1,000 lines, so split a long range into months if the bank's file is large.

Try the QFX in Online before you do anything else to it. A converted file is one more thing that can go wrong.

## The header edit that turns a Quicken download into a QBO

The header edit swaps the bank ID in the file's INTU.BID line, and adjusts a nearby line or two, so QuickBooks Desktop accepts the file as Web Connect. The transactions stay as the bank sent them. A converter tool does this for you, and the result is saved with a `.qbo` ending.

Renaming the file from `.qfx` to `.qbo` on its own is not the same thing. The ending changes, but the bank ID inside does not, so Desktop may still reject it.

The full details, including an annotated before and after of the header lines, are in the guide to [what a QFX to QBO converter changes](/blog/qfx-to-qbo-converter). Read it before editing a file by hand. A stray character in the header can make the whole file unreadable.

Ask your bank as well. A business account, or a separate business sign-in, may list formats a personal account does not. To see what a download screen with a QuickBooks choice looks like, compare the walk-throughs for [the Chase QBO download](/blog/how-to-download-qbo-file-from-chase) and [the Wells Fargo QBO download](/blog/how-to-download-qbo-file-from-wells-fargo). A Quicken-only screen is worth one question to support before you convert anything.

## Is it safe to test a Quicken download in your real company file?

Testing a converted Quicken download in your real company file is safe only after a backup. Back up the QuickBooks Desktop company file first, then import. If the result looks wrong, restore the backup instead of deleting lines one by one. In QuickBooks Online, a spare bank account serves the same purpose.

A short test:

1. Back up the Desktop company file, or add a spare test account in Online.
2. Import the file.
3. Pick one transaction you remember and check its date, amount and direction.
4. Add up the month's deposits and withdrawals and compare them with the bank's statement.
5. If both checks pass, keep the import. If not, restore or delete the test, and look at the file again.

Watch the account choice in step 2. Desktop asks which QuickBooks account the download belongs to. Choosing the wrong one, or creating a new account by accident, sends the lines to the wrong place.

## When the Quicken download loses to a plain CSV

The Quicken download loses to a plain CSV when you want to edit lines before import, or when converting the file for Desktop keeps failing. A CSV opens in a spreadsheet, so you can check it by eye. QuickBooks Online and Xero both take one, with a column-matching step.

| Where the file goes | Quicken (QFX) download | CSV download |
| --- | --- | --- |
| QuickBooks Online | Upload as is | Upload, then match columns |
| QuickBooks Desktop | Convert to QBO first | Needs a separate import route |
| Xero | Import as is; Xero lists QFX | Statement import with column mapping |

For Xero, [Xero's guide to manually importing bank transactions](https://central.xero.com/s/article/About-manually-importing-bank-statements-US) lists QFX among the formats it accepts, so try the Quicken file there before making a CSV.

If the bank gives you neither a usable QFX nor a CSV for the months you need, the PDF statements are the fallback. SimpleBankConvert is being built to turn a digital PDF statement into a CSV or QBO file for the QuickBooks Online upload, and you can [ask to hear when accounts open](/get-started).
