> How to undo a Web Connect import in QuickBooks Desktop after transactions are added: restore a backup or delete the added lines from the register.
To undo a Web Connect import in QuickBooks Desktop after the transactions were added, you have two routes. Restore the company file backup made just before the import, which rolls everything back to that moment. Or open the bank register and delete each added line by hand, which keeps all the other work done since.

## Does QuickBooks Desktop have an undo for a Web Connect import?

No. QuickBooks Desktop keeps no single action that reverses a Web Connect file. A Web Connect file is a QBO file your bank lets you download, and once you add or match its lines in the Bank Feeds Center they become ordinary register entries. Nothing groups them as "the March file" afterwards.

Before you add anything, the downloaded lines are still waiting in the Bank Feeds Center, and that stage is easier to fix. [Intuit's article on downloading bank feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/bank-feeds/download-bank-feed-transactions-quickbooks-desktop/L8o0Aw9VM_US_en_US) says you can delete remaining downloaded transactions, and that once deleted they cannot be downloaded again. The rest of this post deals with lines that already reached the register.

## Restoring the company file backup from before the Web Connect import

A backup taken before the import is the cleanest undo, because it returns the whole company file to the state it was in. Nothing from the Web Connect file survives. The trade-off is that nothing else entered after the backup survives either, so this route fits best when the import was the last thing you did.

Intuit's Desktop download article tells you to back up the company file before downloading, and this is the moment that habit pays off. To restore, follow [Intuit's steps for restoring a backup company file](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/back-data/restore-backup-company-file/L2FptZyV1_US_en_US):

1. Copy the backup (a file ending in .qbb) to your computer's own drive if it sits on a USB stick or cloud folder.
2. From the File menu, choose Open or Restore Company, then Restore a backup copy.
3. Choose Local Backup, find the .qbb file and pick a folder for the restored file.
4. Save, and read every overwrite message before you answer it.

The restore article warns that restoring into the same folder as your current file may overwrite your data. Rename one of the two files, or restore into a new folder, so you keep the current file until you are sure the restored one is right.

## Deleting Web Connect transactions from the bank register by hand

Deleting from the register removes only the imported lines and leaves everything else in place. It fits when the bad file brought in a manageable number of lines, or when other work was entered after the import. It takes longer, and you have to tell imported lines apart from lines entered by hand.

Open the register for the bank account and sort it by date. Work from the file's first date to its last. Lines you added from the download often carry the bank's description as the payee or memo, which helps separate them from checks and deposits you typed yourself. Leave any line that was matched to an entry you made earlier: that entry was in the books before the import.

Delete each imported line, then count. The number of lines removed should equal the number of transactions in the file. If the same file was imported twice, delete only the second copy. The post on [duplicate Web Connect transactions in QuickBooks Desktop](/blog/duplicate-web-connect-transactions-in-quickbooks-desktop) shows how to tell the two copies apart.

## Backup or register: picking the Web Connect undo route

The right route depends on what happened after the import, not on the size of the file. Use the table to decide. The two right-hand columns describe example situations.

| Question | Restore the backup | Delete in the register |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Is there a backup from just before the import? | Yes | No, or it is old |
| Was other work entered after the import? | No | Yes |
| Were lines matched to invoices or bills? | Either: the restore undoes the matches too | Check each invoice or bill afterwards |
| Is any imported line reconciled? | Ask your accountant first | Ask your accountant first |

Xero users face a similar choice with different tools, because Xero remembers which statement each imported line belongs to. The post on [deleting an imported bank statement in Xero](/blog/delete-imported-bank-statement-in-xero) covers that side.

## Why might the same Web Connect file not import twice?

QuickBooks Desktop keeps track of the downloads it has already taken in. Intuit's download article says you cannot download transactions into the same company file more than once. So after a register undo, bringing the same file back in may not give you a fresh set of lines.

That rule protects you from accidental duplicates, but it gets in the way of a correction. If the original file was wrong, download a new file from your bank for the same dates, or have the file rebuilt from the statement, rather than reusing the old one. SimpleBankConvert is being built to make a QBO file from a PDF statement; it is not open yet, and [the get started page](/get-started) adds you to the invitation list. After a backup restore, the company file is back to before the first import, so the download is new to it again.

Before you import the replacement, open it and read the dates and amounts. A QBO file is plain text underneath, and [opening a QFX file without Quicken](/blog/how-to-open-a-qfx-file) shows how to view one, since QBO and QFX files share the same layout.
