You can rarely download bank transactions on iPhone from the bank's app, because most apps offer balances and PDF statements, not CSV or QBO files. The workaround is your bank's full website in Safari, where the export screen usually lives. The file then saves to the Files app, often in Downloads, ready to send to a computer.
Why iPhone bank apps hand you a PDF, not a transaction file
iPhone bank apps are built for checking balances, moving money and depositing checks, so they tend to skip transaction exports. A statement PDF is something the app can show and share. A CSV or QBO export is a feature banks usually keep on their full website, where people doing bookkeeping tend to work.
That leaves two kinds of file you might get from a phone:
- A PDF statement, from the app's statements or documents area. It is the bank's monthly record. QuickBooks Online's statement upload and Xero's import can read one, but it is not a transaction export, and QuickBooks Desktop can't take it.
- A transaction export (CSV, QBO, QFX or OFX), from the bank's website. This is the one your accounting software imports.
If the app has an export option, use it. Many do not, and the next section is the way round that.
Opening the bank's desktop site in Safari on iPhone
The bank's desktop site in Safari often shows the export controls the app hides. Open the bank's website in Safari, sign in, and use Safari's page menu to request the desktop version of the site. The layout will be small, but the download options from a computer should appear.
Step list, using Safari:
- Open Safari and go to your bank's website. Type the address yourself rather than following a link.
- Open Safari's page settings menu in the address bar and choose the option to request the desktop website.
- Sign in. Your bank may ask for a code sent to your phone.
- Open one account's transaction history.
- Find the Download or Export control near the list. Zoom in with two fingers if the text is tiny.
- Pick the format: CSV for Xero or a spreadsheet, QuickBooks or Web Connect for QuickBooks.
- Choose the dates and start the download. Safari will ask before it saves the file.
Some banks send phone browsers to a mobile site regardless. If the export controls still do not show, the phone cannot reach them, and a computer is the answer.
Where does a bank download save on iPhone?
A bank download on iPhone saves to the Files app. Apple's guide to finding files on iPhone says to check the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive if you can't find a downloaded file, and describes On My iPhone as the place for files kept only on the device.
To find it:
- Open the Files app.
- Tap Browse.
- Check iCloud Drive, then Downloads.
- If it is not there, check On My iPhone.
- Use the search box with the bank's name or the file ending, such as
.csvor.qbo.
Rename the file while you are there. Press and hold it, choose Rename and give it a clear name such as checking-2026-05.csv. Bank files often arrive with generic names that are easy to confuse.
Can you upload an iPhone bank file to QuickBooks or Xero?
You can try to upload an iPhone bank file to QuickBooks or Xero in Safari, but a computer is the easier place to finish. The upload screens expect you to pick a file, match columns and review lines, which is slow on a small screen. Moving the file to a laptop takes seconds.
Ways to get it there:
- iCloud Drive. If the file saved in iCloud Drive, it appears on a Mac in Finder, or on the iCloud website from any computer.
- AirDrop to a nearby Mac.
- Email it to yourself, then delete the email afterwards. A bank file holds account details.
For Xero, the steps are in the guide to downloading bank transactions for Xero. If you bank with Mercury, its own export route is in the post on exporting Mercury transactions to QuickBooks. And if what you saved is a spreadsheet of expenses for QuickBooks Desktop, see importing expenses into QuickBooks Desktop from Excel.
If all you could get on the phone was a PDF statement, keep it. SimpleBankConvert is being built to turn a digital PDF statement into a CSV or QBO file that QuickBooks Online can upload, and its homepage shows a sample while accounts are not yet open.
iPhone bank downloads that open as text or the wrong file type
iPhone bank downloads can look broken when they are fine. Safari may show a QBO or CSV file as a page of text instead of saving it, or the file may arrive with an extra ending such as .txt. Neither means the data is damaged, but both need a small fix before import.
- The file opens as text in Safari. Use the Share button and choose Save to Files rather than copying the text.
- The name ends in
.qbo.txtor.csv.txt. Rename it in Files and remove the extra.txt. Files may ask you to confirm the new ending. - Numbers opens the CSV and you save it. Saving from a spreadsheet app can change dates or create a new file type. Import the original download instead.
- A PDF instead of an export. If the file is a PDF, you picked a statement or printable view. Go back to the history page and choose a data format.
Whichever file you end up with, check the first and last dates before importing, so you know the download covered the days you asked for.
