How to Download QBO File from Regions

By SimpleBankConvertPublished July 10, 2025Updated July 10, 2025

To download a QBO file from Regions, sign in to Regions online banking on a computer, open the account's transaction history, choose the export or download option, pick the QuickBooks format and the dates, and save the .qbo file. Months older than that export can reach are filled from your Regions PDF statements, converted to a QuickBooks file.

Steps for the Regions online banking export

The Regions export is part of the account's transaction history in online banking. Regions' online banking page says you can use QuickBooks by Intuit with Regions online banking. The download control's name and place can change, so read your own screen as you go.

  1. Sign in to Regions online banking in a desktop browser. A phone app is the wrong tool for file exports.
  2. Choose the account. Do checking, savings and cards one at a time.
  3. Open the account's activity or transaction history.
  4. Select the export or download option.
  5. Pick the QuickBooks format and enter a start and end date.
  6. Download, then rename the file with the account and period, for example regions-checking-2026-q2.qbo.

Start the range on the day after the last transaction already in QuickBooks for that account. End it on a day whose activity has fully posted, so pending lines don't change after you import them.

Which Regions format should QuickBooks users pick?

QuickBooks users should pick the Regions option for QuickBooks, which gives a file ending in .qbo. That file goes into QuickBooks Online through the bank upload and into QuickBooks Desktop through Web Connect. The Quicken option makes a .qfx file instead, and a spreadsheet option makes a .csv.

The choice in short:

  • QuickBooks Desktop: QBO only. Desktop's Web Connect won't read the others.
  • QuickBooks Online: QBO first. A CSV also works, though you map its columns during the upload.
  • Quicken: the Quicken file.

Intuit's guide to manually uploading transactions in QuickBooks Online suggests a QBO file and limits each upload to 350 KB and 1,000 lines. A quarter of checking activity usually fits. A busy card account may need one file per month.

When the Regions export ends: filling older months from statements

The Regions export covers recent activity only, while statements go back much further. Regions says online banking lets you view, download and print up to seven years of account statements. So when the QBO file starts later than you need, the statements cover the gap.

Find the export's limit by asking for a long range and reading the earliest date that comes back. That date is your cutover. Here is an example plan for a business moving its books into QuickBooks from January:

Months (example) Source
January to March Regions PDF statements, converted to QBO or CSV
April onward Regions QBO export

The two rows must not overlap. If both a converted statement and the export hold the same April days, those lines arrive twice.

QuickBooks Online's manual upload can read a PDF statement for you to review, but QuickBooks Desktop needs it converted into a .qbo file. SimpleBankConvert is being built to turn digital PDF statements into a CSV or QBO file for the QuickBooks Online upload, and to tell you when a statement can't be read cleanly rather than guessing. It's in early access, so you can ask for a spot now.

Is a Regions Quicken file a mistake worth fixing?

A Regions Quicken file saved by mistake is worth replacing if you use QuickBooks Desktop, and only a minor issue in QuickBooks Online. Online accepts QFX through the same upload screen as QBO, so the file may go in as it is. Desktop is stricter.

Intuit's article on downloading bank feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop says Web Connect accepts only .qbo files, and that a bank's QFX or QIF exports won't import. The same article warns that you can't download the same transactions into one Desktop company file twice. So before you try again, check whether any lines from the first attempt already reached the register.

For Desktop, the cleanest fix is to return to Regions and download the same dates again in the QuickBooks format. Renaming the file ending from .qfx to .qbo is a common shortcut. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, and when it fails the error rarely says why. The bank's own QBO file avoids the question, and it takes a minute to download.

Keep the wrong file out of the way once you have the right one. Delete it, or move it to a folder you won't upload from, so it can't slip into a later import.

If you actually keep your books in Quicken, the QFX file was the right choice. The guide to importing a QFX file into Quicken without duplicates covers that side.

Other regional banks and credit unions handle downloads in a similar way, sometimes with fewer formats.
